Nakagin Capsule Tower Updates 30 July 2021

Nakagin Capsule Tower
Update 30 July, 2021

Capsules will reborn into museum exhibits and accommodations.

Finding that the chances of the Nakagin Capsule Tower Building will remain at the site of Ginza being very low, Nakagin Capsule Tower Preservation and Restoration Project had negotiated and resolved to acquire capsules (max 139 pods) from the landowner to succeed the metabolism architecture and its theory.

When the tower is demolished, the capsules will be taken out and refurbished to the ideal shape with the help of Kisho Kurokawa Architects & Associates.
Instead of preserving the building as it is, it is a project to inherit the design concept of “taking over the concept of Metabolism and passing on to the next generation”.
We are starting a new project of removing the capsule and donate them to museums on top of reusing them as accommodation facilities.

The Nakagin Capsule Preservation and Restoration Project are also working on a book that records the current building situation. With the cooperation of owners and residents, we have finished photo shooting 50 capsules out of 140 capsules.
We believe it is necessary to record measurement surveys of each capsule, and with the cooperation of architectural laboratories of multiple universities, we completed more than 20 capsules at the moment.

The book is scheduled to be published in February 2022.
