Think outside the box!: Detox Experience at Reversible Destiny Lofts Mitaka

Environment can change one’s whole life.

Arise your inner sense by experiencing a room full of tricks. We promise that your mindset will change in just 90min tour.

Obviously unique looking building

If you are an architecture lover, you probably have seen this outstanding building in the residential area of Mitaka. It is an apartment building consisting of 9 dwelling units.  Most of the units are used as residence, short stay accommodations, and some rooms are used as teleworking office space.

The first impression I had for this building was “How colorful! So fun!”
Soon
, I came to realize the deep meaning of every detail (form, color, etc.) used in this building.

Photos later!

Its fun appearance will make you smile everywhere you look.
Guided by the manager, Mr. Matsuda, we were invited to the room, the 3-bedroom unit,  on the top floor.
We got permission to take pictures, then went inside.
I got so excited to see the interior design that I have always seen on the website. I took out my phone with excitement for the photos.

Matsuda san, coming inside the room at the end said to everyone, “OK, Let’s just leave your iPhones for the time being and take a closer look at the room”.

Whoops…! Yes, he did say photo shoot is fine. But it probably was not a good manner to start shooting before appreciating what we see for the first time.

That made me realize that I always take out my phone and take pictures anyway, without even thinking.
From this point, I started to see how I had been bound by customs or preconceived ideas, and living without thinking deeply.

Which room to sleep in and where to put the furniture

As you can see in the photo, this apartment room has a spherical room, an uneven floor, a kitchen in the center, and many other things you don’t usually find in apartment rooms.
When three people share this apartment, one of them is supposed to live in a spherical room.

How can you live in the sphere?

There are no specific answers to this question, meaning each resident needs to think about how to use the room by trying a lot of ways themselves. Some might accept the curve and sleep along the curve, while others will try to flatten the concave spherical floor. There is always an option for you to sleep in the living room with bumpy floor. Actually, some people find it comfy to sleep on the bumps.

Matsuda-san told us something awakening;

“in ordinary apartment rooms, the location of TV antenna terminals are already set on the wall before you move in, so you have to set up TV first and then think about layout of furniture after that.  At this point, your life is already taken over by the house.

I had never thought that I was being controlled by environment.  I simply accepted things as they were.  How innocent I had been!

The same goes for the arrangement of furniture.
As mentioned previously, the floor is uneven and bumpy. If you look closely, it even has an angle. Obviously, it is hard to set furniture on this floor.
In other words, furniture is not something you always put on the floor.

If you can’t put it on the floor, what would you do??

Colors and shapes are more than just designs

The Reversible Destiny Lofts Mitaka are the first residential units designed “not to die.”
The idea of “reversible destiny” means that we have to be aware of our own body and realize that you can do things you thought were impossible.
Based on this concept, the house is designed to be centered around your body, allowing you to think about how your body reacts to every gimmick in the house.

” The residents of this apartment live in various ways, which probably are far beyond your imagination.” says Matsuda san.
When you put your body in the center of the environment, you try to look for a point that you feel comfortable with.  When you find the point fits your sense at the end, it is something you can’t think of in the first place.

Before the visit, I imagined that there are too many colors used for a house and it may be a little gaudy.
But I was wrong.
Every bright color used in the house has a reason.

Conclusions

Having been living in an ordinary, functional house for many years, it seems that there are many stereotypes ingrained in me. The visit to the Reversible Destiny Lofts was an experience that made me think about how the current environment affects my way of life. At the same time as I felt that we aren’t making full use of our original ability to “live” because people tend to choose the easy way.

This experience made me wonder if “common sense” or “normality” is always right for everybody.  They can be misconception or delusion in some cases.  By reviewing and verifying those things I have accepted without any doubt, I may be able to discover what is truly right or wrong for me.  I felt like my thinking process was detoxified and renewed through this experience.  In fact, I was so excited that I could not go to sleep that night.

If you ever have a chance to visit the Reversible Destiny Lofts,  I recommend you go with no prior information or assumption.

Try figuring out the various living challenges by yourself.

Experience the Reversible Destiny Lofts “detox.”  You will have a brand-new way to look at the world, and furthermore, discover a new dimension of yourself.
